My first compositions and arrangements, my first experiments with recording, with structure, with the sonic landscape. My first album.
Well, almost. Before this, I had released, printed, and sold a more prototypical version of this same demo, all the way back in the spring of 2009. Then, it was called "Water, Walls, and Skies," and it was raw, uncontrolled 16-bit MIDI, and nothing else; no samples, no libraries, just 16-bit MIDI, which I (at the time) saw fit to sell to strangers. Though it paid for some beer back in the day, it can hardly be said to have been a release, being practically unlistenable.
This demo is very close to that very first release of mine in terms of arrangement, with many of the songs and ideas carrying over. In fact, some of the unprocessed 16-bit MIDI remains. The rest of this album is 16-bit or 32-bit MIDI controlled and programmed with digital instrument and sample libraries. Though some of the instrument emulation and sound design was original, much of it was derived from templates.
This album marks a very early place in my understanding of music, of art, or of anything really. And though it would be with hubris for me to assert that I now understand things, I can comfortably say that I had a measurably weaker grasp on musicality in 2009. So this is an inexperienced recording at best. There was no mastering, the drums remain unprocessed, as does the bass and much else.
Still, I think it's important to remember where you started. There might even be a few interesting movements in here, a few gems. Ideally, I'll be salvaging and sampling those for work in the future. For now, find herein my musical primordia. I bid you good listening. Please enjoy.
